Ashbourne is surrounded by beautiful countryside and quiet roads. Many people choose Ashbourne as a place to live for exactly this reason.
It is an ideal base for anyone who likes to take relatively undemanding walks, without using their car. More challenging walks can be found only a short drive away.
For cyclists, Ashbourne is a great base whether you want an easy route or a strenuous one.
Local walks
The surrounding countryside has a good network of public paths and quiet roads. Some routes get overgrown during summer or muddy in winter but they are generally no better or worse in this respect than other similar districts.
Nearby and heading south towards Derby, the walking is generally easy through rolling fields and woodlands. There are very few steep climbs or descents, and those that do exist are short.
Heading north, the scenery gets steeper and more challenging as the Derbyshire Dales and Staffordshire Moorlands live up to their names. Even so the walking remains easy. Dovedale and Thorpe Cloud are honeypot magnets that attract huge numbers of people, but it is very easy to avoid the crowds.
We are producing a selection of easy walks starting from Ashbourne, as downloadable pdfs (more coming soon but this what we've got so far):
