Open gardens
When
Cromford, near Ashbourne, is opening its gardens today.
Beyond the historic stone frontages of Arkwright’s mill village are the hidden garden plots which every cottage was allotted, with grassy hillsides rising to more modern gardens enjoying stunning views across the valleys of Cromford and the River Derwent, circled by woodland, rocky outcrops and the 1000 ft moors of the Peak District.
This year, more gardens in “Over” Cromford are added to those in the “Nether” village and a free minibus is provided for those who would rather not walk up the steeper lanes. There will be artwork on show and a poet in residence for the day.
Before or after the garden ramble you can visit Cromford’s several outstanding independent shops or patronise a pub or restaurant. Wander as you wish, or follow our suggested route involving two stiles - stout footwear is recommended.Sumptuous home-made refreshments will be served in several gardens.
